It started out very strong, but the writing deteriorated pretty quickly. There are a number of recognizable plot beats, but I had trouble matching the main characters’ emotions with the flat and clunky dialogue. However, the story itself was fine, and I already own the sequel, so I’ll definitely read the second. (I’m not even mad about it—despite the solidly mediocre writing, nothing about it irritated me outright, which is more than I can say about many other two star books.
