This series is a hot mess and I cannot put it down. I understand some of the inconsistencies are deliberate to show how the manipulation of history and origin stories can be used to consolidate power, but even with that in mind it’s a bit much. The Poppy asking questions and being stabby jokes get old. And yet the last couple hundred pages really pick up and had me wanting to see what is going to happen and where this questionable world building will end up.

This book was like 80% filler and 20% great plot twist and story. I wish she had an editor for these books because they would be amazing.

Something good, something bad - A Review

Drie boeken ver, en wauw, moet er mij nog altijd duidelijk gemaakt worden dat ons hoofdpersonage o zo speciaal is? I mean: i get it: ze is bijzonder en ze is een pick-me-girl. Als ik dan toch iets leuk zou moeten vinden aan Poppy, dan is het wat ze symboliseert en hoe ze dat kan uitspelen want eerlijk is eerlijk, de wereld heeft de schrijfster goed bedacht en er zit potentieel in het verhaal. Een ander pluspunt: het boek zet je aan om de gekste complottheorieën te verzinnen en als je denkt nee dat gaat te ver dan zit je meestal juist. Maar, en dit is echt heel jammer en een rem op het doorlezen, dit boek bevat zo random smut!

Om terug te komen om de pick-me-habit: dit gaat niet alleen op voor Poppy, maar ook voor Casteel (let’s call it a een pick-me-boy), om te illustreren volgende situatie:

Poppy: "ik hou van je Casteel."

Casteel: "Ik dacht niet... Ik bedoel, ik dacht... ik dacht van wel. Dat geloofde ik, dat moest ik geloven, maar ik denk dat ik het niet echt wist."

Me: serieus Casteel? NA ALLES WAT GEBEURD IS

Poppy en Casteel zijn ook zo melig met elkaar dat ik soms denk dat ik een overgoten word met honing, maar het is te veel en te plakkerig en het wil maar niet van mijn huid afdruipen en ik word er irritant van. Terwijl: er zit echt zo veel potentieel in de verhaallijnen! En er waren ook effectief goede plottwist waarvan ik dacht ‘girrlllll.’ Lees ik de boeken verder? Geen idee, als ik het doe is het niet voor Poppy en Casteel maar voor Atlantië.

Ok the pacing on this one was weird, the middle dragged and it definitely started to verge into smut over substance territory, but that ending saved it.
