The extent of horrific evil that the white men did in the Congo, and elsewhere around the globe, remains hidden until one begins to peep into in such accounts of history. There are of course multiple accounts of horrendous deeds commited by other so called human beings throughout history. But this singular example is something which needs more light shone upon it, even after much of the crimes against humanity had begun to be exposed in the early 1900s. Why have European countries and the US been so slow to fully acknowledge the extent of the evil done to the Africans, as well as other indigenous peoples? How can we hope to set things right, to make amends, to ask forgiveness, when we still largely ignore and do no not educate ourselves about our history? I hope many will give this book and others like it a read and more education and reformation will come about as a result of it. It's a well written and important history in the transformation of humanity and civil society.

An in-depth and well researched look into the colonization of the Congo by Belgium, and King Leopold specifically. A historical look into a complicated dark period of the past, Hochschild does an impressive job of packing in facts while also allowing the book to read more like a novel and less like a textbook.
I was drawn to read this book after reading Poisonwood Bible, and it provided some much needed context into the history of the Congo and how the country and its people were utterly abused in the name of western profits. I was hoping to learn more about the path the independence and the story of Patrice Lumumba, however the book just lightly touched on this topic, so I’ll look to the next book for more on his story.
