Interesting premise, but it didn’t quite get there. Also, Vega and Noah had zero chemistry.

Full disclosure, I finished this book days ago but only now got a chance to gather my thoughts for a review. I had been feeling kind of slumpy the past few weeks and needed something relatively easy to read, entertaining, and fast paced. And boy was this book the perfect pick!

Here we are following secluded seventeen year-old Vega as her mother passes away and inherits the title of the last Astronomer, who is deemed the saving grace for a pandemic running rampant in their world. We follow Vega as she runs for her life through the wilderness in search of a cure for an illness that would otherwise destroy them all.

What I liked:
- I loved our secondary characters! (I don't want to spoil anything but they're awesome)
- Fast moving, easy to understand plot that kept me engaged the entire time. This book truly reinvigorated me and my love of my reading.
- The setting! This book is very much an adventure and the world building and location changes are so well done.

What I didn't like:
- Vega, at least for the first half of the book, is extremely annoying and makes TERRIBLE decisions. We do see some character growth as the book continues so hold out hope.
- Some of the language and characterization feels very YA, so it's just something to be aware of. I didn't find it too bothersome since I was more focused on/invested in the plot development.

I wavered back and forth on rating it either four or five stars, but decided on five since I had such a blast reading it.

The concept on this books sounds interesting, but the execution is boring and repetitive from start to finish

2.5/5 ⭐

This book started out so slow and it kept dragging along until about the 70% mark. And then it seemed a bit all over the place.

I didn't really buy how the MC fell in love with Noah after knowing him for just a short period of time. And also they barely had meaningful interactions, besides being on the run together. So I didn't buy into the romance.

The most interesting part of the book was when they made it to the ship, and then I was all in. But I have to say I hated the ending.

Maybe it's my own fault for going in blind and thinking this was more fantasy than it actually was.

Spoiler I would have much rather liked to see them find the ship sooner and for her to make it out and over to the other planet and end the book by going through the black hole and finding Noah on the other side. Or even not finding anything on the other side and dying. Anything but leaving it up in the air...

The writing is atmospheric, the plot picks up once the stakes and scope get revealed, and I enjoyed the ending, but until then, we're stuck with egregiously long chapters, an insta-love relationship I couldn't find myself invested in, a lack of organic dialogue, and antagonists whose motivations barely hold up.

took some time to let this book simmer in my head and decided to change my rating,, i love a good romance but vega and noah's relationship felt rushed, and it was hard to enjoy them until the last second

the story was interesting and i enjoyed the world building quite a lot, but i just felt some of the characters were awfully flat in comparison. while the writing itself was fine and actually quite pretty, some scenes could've been executed a lot better?? I'm just not sure how to feel about this book in general

and the cliffhanger/open ending left feeling dried:(
medium-paced

I got this book because I love Shea’s books. This one was just not for me, but it is well written.
