Premesse ottime: un mondo in cui il Re Sole non è morto, ma è diventato un vampiro e da allora regna come despota.
Era presentato come “l’incontro tra Bridgerton e Twilight”, e infatti quasi non l’ho preso, poiché non sono fan di nessuno dei due, eppure alla fine ho deciso di dargli una chance. Dopo pochi capitoli mi sono trovata a sperare che diventasse un po’ di più “l’incontro tra Bridgerton e Twilight”.

I personaggi secondari potrebbero anche essere dei muri e nella trama non cambierebbe nulla. Sono tutti perfettamente inutili finché all’improvviso non si scopre una cosa incredibile che non si sa come non avevamo notato.
Ma forse la colpa è in realtà della protagonista, dato che il libro è scritto in prima persona. Non mi è mai capitato di odiare una protagonista, Jeanne ha l’onore di essere la prima. Egoista, viziata e ipocrita, non si accorge neanche di chi la circonda, tanto è accecata dalla propria rabbia.
Una protagonista che vorrebbe essere “morally gray”, ma che divide il mondo il bianco e nero, etichettando istantaneamente chiunque come buono o cattivo. Che poi in realtà per lei sono tutti cattivi, dei mostri indipendentemente dal fatto che siano umani o vampiri, dimenticandosi che secondo la sua visione del mondo lei stessa è il cattivo della storia.

Non so se sia dovuto alla traduzione, ma ho trovato la scrittura ridondante e i dialoghi e pensieri della protagonista irreali al punto di darmi fisicamente fastidio mente leggevo (si, mi ha fatto cringiare). Inoltre l’uso insistente dei punti esclamativi mi ha rovinato la lettura.

Allora, il contorno c’era e l’ho trovato molto interessante. Il problema è che per quanto riguarda la storia della protagonista, sembra non muoversi se non per improvvisi colpi di fortuna che avvengono ciclicamente: Jeanne ha un’idea, è un’idea del ca**o, è nei guai, brucio de cu, è salva, e le viene un’altra idea geniale.
Sinceramente avrei preferito leggere il POV di un’altra persona qualsiasi piuttosto che il suo, persino di un vampiro.

A parte il Re Sole, che per ovvi motivi non vediamo spesso, non vediamo praticamente mai dei vampiri, e anche quando li vediamo non sembrano i mostri che Jeanne continua a ripetere che sono.
Altri villain sono umani, ma in realtà sono personaggi secondari perfettamente inutili finché da un rigo all’altro c’è un plot twist e la protagonista deve affrontarli.

Ennesimo plot twist completamente a caso senza che nessuna azione o pensiero abbia anticipato questo esito. Però mi è sembrato che la protagonista aprisse finalmente gli occhi dopo che la sua vendetta l’aveva accecata e anche per questo l’ho apprezzato.

Come ho già detto il contorno mi è molto piaciuto. L’atmosfera, le scene “splatter”, il contesto politico e le vite dei personaggi secondari mi hanno intrattenuta, ma ad un certo punto mi sono dovuta costringere ad andare avanti solo per togliermelo di mezzo il prima possibile.

I am really glad that vampire fiction is emerging again. This one is pretty standard as far as vampire fiction goes, with the added element of Louis XIV as the vampire king and the setting of Versailles. I wish more of his character was explored, but the novel spent a lot of time on the main character, who honestly wasn't that interesting. I had a hard time investing in her. But I enjoyed this one. I mean... vampires... how can you not?
semplicemente stupendo, erano mesi che un libro non mi catturava in questo modo, ho trovato la storia molto avvincente e per nulla scontata, motivo per cui non riuscivo quasi a staccarmi dal libro, ho adorato tutti i personaggi anche se mi sono affezionata più ad alcuni che ad altri (jeanne, naoko, rafael e suraj, montfalcon e orfeo etc), non mi aspettavo la rappresentazione lgbt e un personaggio esplicitamente bi ed è stata una sorpresa più che gradita, in conclusione: libro fantastico, ottimi personaggi, colpi di scena che a volte mi hanno commossa e a volte suscitato anche ansia, più un po’ di rappresentazione inaspettata ma ben accetta, che dire? lo consiglio al 100%

Thought it was romantasy but thr vampires were just actually evil and not hotties lol. May try again another time when I'm more in the mood for this kind of story

Despite a few YAisms and some trepidation for the author about what kind of book he wants it to be, the Court of Shadows delivers an engaging and addictively readable experience.
Set in a world where Louis XIV, the Sun King, decided on his deathbed to become a vampire, the novel takes place almost 300 years later in a world that has scarcely moved on from the early 18th century. Certain modern inventions have come to pass, particularly blue jeans, which are mentioned weirdly often, but otherwise the world is stuck in 1715. This creates some delightful scenes where outdated medical concept like the four humors are treated as gospel fact in what would be 2014. This attention to detail spans the entire book and really sells the world. Most of the rules of the Magna Vampyria are based off of of French feudal customs, and as a French history buff it was a delight to make those connections.
The story is also simple, but benefits immensely from the immersive world Dixen has created. A girl from the countryside falls prey to the oppressive vampire state and, after mutilating the face of a young noblewoman and taking her place at Versailles, works to secure her vengeance against the people who murdered her family. What is unique is that our heroine can barely be called that at times, as she does anything to survive and carry on her plans. This includes deceit, murder, and ruining many pots of coffee. Each lie stacking up and causing more trouble for her as she stumbles toward a greater conspiracy at the heart of the vampire state. It's a surprisingly effective story and it reads very well thanks to a mostly (see below) good translation that flows well. The prose doesn't quite leap off the page, but it is effective.
My only real complaint is that the book seems a little uncertain of what it wants to be. The opening chapters are an absolute gore fest, as are later chapters. However, large parts of the book are essentially Harry Potter at Versailles, and all that would entail. There seems to be a foot in both the adult novel camp and in the young adult genre, and this fence sitting only hampers the book as it can create disjointed moods as the needle moves from one extreme to the other.
There are also some annoying tropes from young adult fiction that show up. Our heroine is almost instantly capable of doing anything better than her more educated peers, and having some unique trait like a different hair color.
I think this also might have been a translation issue, but some of the prose just falls flat. It's more noticeable in earlier parts of the book, but there are some passages that just didn't translate from French very well.
However, the thrilling story is engaging and can easily dance around any of these small issues. The novel had me hooked from the jump I managed to read the entire thing in a day. It does end on a sequel hook, but for once I'm not upset by it and eagerly await the next volume coming out in July 2024.

Absolument incroyable, j'ai adoré ! Un vrai page turner avec une intrigue pleine de rebondissements et des personnages qui cachent bien leur jeu... Vraiment agréablement surprise, je ne m'attendais pas à passer un aussi bon moment, j'ai hâte de lire la suite.
