I liked the plot, and above all the world-building with all the twists with History and the magic elements. But I hated the main character at the end of the book, she was just too much, too morally-grey, with almost nothing to sympathise with.

This book started out with a bang... which quickly died. I love a good vengeance plot and the author's rendition of vampires in an alternate historical France setting. But this one was all over the place and Jeanne is a despicable character who will do anything to get revenge for her family. I'm fine with her Machiavellian moral compass but not fine with how her lies, deceit, and numerous murders have little consequence. In the end, almost all of them are smoothed over as if they were okay. I'm not sure that Jeanne ever really had any character development throughout the story aside from becoming more and more cruel.
To top it all off, the romance between her and Tristan was more dead than the vampires.

imaginez vous un monde où louis xiv est un vampire sanguinaire. si ça vous paraît intriguant et un peu rigolos alors je vous conseille ce livre.
j'ai passé un très bon moment de lecture. ça fait un bien vous de retrouver des vampires mauvais. ils avaient perdu leur statut de monstre et ça me manquait.
ce livre suit le personnage de jeanne qui veut se venger de ceux qui sont la cause de son malheur. elle va donc prendre l'identité de diane, une noble, et se rapprocher de ceux dont elle veut la mort. pour ça, elle va entrer dans une école.
si comme moi, vous voyez défiler une ribambelle de cliché sur les exoles en fiction, ne vous inquiétez pas ! victor dixen en a évité de nombreux et ceux qui restent rendent l'histoire très divertissante.
je ne suis probablement pas la cible principale de ce livre mais ça reste une très bonne lecture. et je découvrirai la suite avec joie
petit bonus : c'est de l'historic fantasy donc je ne m'attendais pas à autant d'ethnie et d'orientation sexuelle différentes. ça m'a agréablement surprise
