🇳🇱: Wat een ervaring was dit. Ik heb me het hele boek geërgerd aan Jeanne, ik kon er niet zo goed over dat ze koste wat het kost haar wraak wou hebben. Ze kwam binnen als een hulpeloze lam, maar verlaat het hof als een achterbakse rat. Buiten mijn haat om richting de daden van Jeanne heb ik wel genoten. Ik las het boek iets minder vlot weg dan verwacht, maar het verhaallijn was erg uniek. De personages kwamen heel mooi tot leven en het was leuk om te zien dat iedereen zijn eigen geheimen meeneemt naar de stallen. De een iets luguberder dan de ander. Het einde van dit boek was erg onverwacht en goed doordacht. Je vraagt je vanzelf af wat er in het volgende boek gaat gebeuren. Ik ben ook erg benieuwd geworden naar het verhaal van de koning en ik hoop hier dan ook zeker wat meer over te lezen. Een leuke toevoeging is de dingen die je in dit boek leert over de Romeinse goden. Ik heb dingen geleerd die ik nog niet wist dus dat vond ik erg leuk.
🇬🇧What an experience this was. I was annoyed by Jeanne throughout the book, I couldn't really get over the fact that she wanted her revenge at all costs. She came in like a helpless lamb, but left the court like a conniving rat. Apart from my hatred towards Jeanne's actions, I did enjoy it. I read the book a little slower than expected, but the storyline was very unique. The characters came to life very nicely and it was nice to see that everyone brings their own secrets to the stables. One slightly more gruesome than the other. The ending of this book was very unexpected and well thought out. You naturally wonder what will happen in the next book. I have also become very curious about the king's story and I certainly hope to read more about it. A nice addition is the things you learn about the Roman gods in this book. I learned things I didn't know before so I really enjoyed that.

Door dit verhaal heb ik me toch wat moeten worstelen. De schrijfstijl was nogal stroef, het leest naar mijn gevoel helemaal niet zo vlot als andere aangeprezen boeken van het moment.
Het verhaal speelt zich af in adellijke kringen van Lodewijk XIV, en bepaalde woorden en zinsconstructies lijken recht uit die tijd te komen.
Qua verhaal had ik er ook meer van verwacht, er zijn wel enkele kleine plottwists maar het was niet het verhaal waarbij ik op het puntje van mijn stoel zat en pagina's kon verslinden.

La historia me ha gustado, me ha mantenido entretenida y creo que realmente tiene potencial. Ahora bien, hay ciertas pegas en cuanto al desarrollo de esta.
En primer lugar, la forma de narrar del autor no me ha gustado nada, creo que el tipo de lenguaje que utiliza no es para mí. En ocasiones se me hacía muy pesada. El ritmo, además, es demasiado lento y, de repente, todo se acelera y suceden demasiadas cosas que no te ha dado tiempo a procesar. Las conversaciones, por su parte, me parecen forzadas y, en ocasiones, un tanto falsas. Quizá esto tenga más que ver con la traducción que con otra cosa, pero sencillamente es un no para mí.
Por otro lado, la protagonista. No he empatizado NADA con Jeanne. Venganza, venganza y más venganza. Aunque, en ocasiones parece olvidarse momentáneamente por qué está ahí. Quizá esto último es más cosa mía.
En cuanto al resto de personajes, tampoco he logrado conectar con ninguno de ellos.
No todo podía ser malo y es que, pese a que no ha terminado de convencerme, el libro se lee solo. Una Francia infestada de Vampiros, cortes y misterios, crueldad… Todo pinta increíblemente bien.

Gave it 75 pages, was very excited and then we entered The Selection and I was over it. I'm sure it's executed much better but I can't.
This was quickly a five-star read for me since it combined my infatuation with vampires and the French aristocracy in this dark fantasy of blood, betrayal, and monsters. The macabre and evil Court of Versailles, as well as the Grand Ecurie, were an excellent backdrop for a revenge story that would kickstart a revolution vampiric France needs. I am now impatiently waiting for The Court of Miracles to be released so I can sink my teeth into the story again.
