This was one of the best fantasy novels I have read in a long time! This needs more hype. I was absolutely gripped from square one the characters are so well written and realised.
It is very magic light so if what you want from your fantasy is big sprawling magic systems this won't give you that. Though I think there will be a lot more explorations of the magic in book 2.
However, if you find yourself annoyed when complicated issues are resolved too easily, if you're tired of the same stories being told over and over, if you like messy characters and complicated relationships and you want to read one if not the best revolution story of all time then please please read this book.
It is very magic light so if what you want from your fantasy is big sprawling magic systems this won't give you that. Though I think there will be a lot more explorations of the magic in book 2.

I went into this booking thinking it was going to be more fantasy and less political drama and I was wrong. I liked the tension between the two main characters, Luca and Touraine, and I think the duel points of views worked well for the book.
I loved the world building, I could clearly see the coutry of Balladaire in my mind's eye. This is definitely a fantasy becausethere's magic in the world but I think the book was too heavy on politics for me have to rated it four stars or higher.

“The Unbroken’ by C.L. Clark is a tense fantasy steeped in the political machinations of the heir to the throne and a soldier questioning her loyalty.
Touraine is a soldier sent to quell a rebellion in the homeland that she was stolen from. After arriving, she realizes that there is more going on in the country than she suspected and that there are still some personal connections that exist for her. She also meets Luca, the princess who is secretly trying to steal the throne from her uncle. As the two women connect, they begin to learn more about how they can create peace in this country but it may require them to come close to committing treason.
Clark creates a fascinating story rooted in complex characters that it is easy to care for. This world is filled with political intrigue and a cast of fascinating and sometimes despicable characters. Touraine and Luca are both easy to care for and easy to curse at in the same breath. They feel like living people with all of their flaws painfully obvious. The story took a number of twists and turns and Clark keeps the reader guessing about what will happen next. I'm fascinated to see where the story goes in the second installment.

I’m having a hard time deciding how to write this review. Especially since I did like the book but I question some of the choices the author makes…
What is the book about (without spoilers):
Touraine has been a soldier for most parts of her life. She was a child stolen from her family and she was raised to serve the empire. But when her company is sent back to the land she comes from, to stop a rebellion, nog everything goes as planned.
Luca is the princes of the empire, sent to her rebel filled colony to still the rebellion. She needs a turncoat to reach her goals.
Together they are looking for a way towards peace between the Empire and the colony.
My thoughts about the book:
Like i said before this book is hat to review. There are a lot of things happening in this novel that I do love but that doesn’t solve my mixed feelings about some things in the plot.
The world-building in this book is amazing. It’s rich and details but we haven’t learned everything there is to know about this world and the author leaves the reader with some major questions especially about the magic system. I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing since it’s the first book of a series and I cannot wait to read the sequel.
The writingstyle used for this book is impressive. It reads away in a good pace but I sometimes felt like I was thrown in a scene without any explanation of how we came to that point.
The characters aren’t badly written but i also didn’t think that they were done especially well. One is a princes studying from birth to be queen and the other is a luitenant who has command over her own regiment but some how both of them weren’t able to make a well thought out plan….they both should have known better for 80% of the book.
I hated the relationship between the two main characters. When I heard this book was sapphic I couldn’t contain my happiness but this relationships was a burning dumpster fire of toxic waist.
However I did love the plot and the side plots. This book shows us a good explanation of the sentence “Hey Colonizer.” It also shows how the europions destroyed all the different cultures that they got there hands on.
