This story will both warm your heart and break it. It took just a few hours to read and, once I started, I couldn't put it down. The story that shared the love between the brothers against the backdrop of the horror of the First World War, particularly in the context of the ending, was masterfully crafted.

Moments of this novel were really moving, though I found the female characters as well as one of the brothers to be working purely for sentimentality in the story. I'm looking forward to teaching this story to my students, particularly to see how they absorb the commentary on the more dishonourable experiences veterans of WWI had to endure at the hands of policy.
