I remember crying so much over this book that I threw it across the room in anger. I'd say that I enjoyed it but I don't think it's the right word. But overall it is a brilliantly written book and I would recommend it, bear in mind that I warned you!

Private Peaceful is the story of three brothers and one girl: Big John, who suffered from meningitis when he was a baby and experienced brain damage; Charlie, who has trouble with authority and following the rules; and Tommy, who carries the terrible secret of the role he played in their father's death. Molly, a girl from their village, becomes a playmate of the boys. Over the years, Molly and Charlie fall in love, and this causes tension between Charlie and Tommy, who loves her, too.

Tenants on the Colonel's land, Tommy and his family are at the whims of the Colonel's skewed sense of justice and foul temper. The boys run up against the Colonel several times, poaching from his land to feed themselves, and rescuing a dog he wanted to kill. When the war escalates, the Colonel decides that every eligible tenant and employee on his land must enlist-- including Charlie. Although he is not old enough, Tommy goes, too, and the brothers are assigned to the same unit.

Set in the years before and during World War I England, the book is narrated by Tommy, now a soldier in Belgium. He is counting down the hours until dawn when it is revealed that something terrible will happen to him. Each chapter begins with Tommy's reflection of his current experience on this night, then shifts to a flashback from his childhood.

Morpurgo powerfully describes the desolate conditions of battlefield life and the unending stress and fear soldiers endure. Suffering horror after horror, Charlie makes an impetuous, but noble choice that changes his life and Tommy's forever. The conclusion of the book is shocking and horrible, all the more so because it is based on facts.

Based on the author's personal interviews with WWI veterans, and in-depth research, Private Peaceful reveals little known details about Britain's shameful treatment of its soldiers.

Before you think that the title is a plot device, Morpurgo discovered a tombstone with the name Private Peaceful on it during his research.

This my third time reading Private Peaceful and it still remains as one of my favourite books ever written. The story is so heartbreakingly beautiful and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. If you're thinking of reading it do it. Don't hesitate.

Didn't like this one. It was far too short; I feel like I barely got to know the characters and then it was over. Reminded me of All Quiet on the Western Front, but not as good.
