I didn't like this nearly as much as Decline and Fall, but it was still a good read. The bit at the end where Tom randomly runs off to Brazil was hell of annoying, but I did like the twist of the Dickens-obsessed hermit and the overall darkness of the ending.

This is the first novel that I've read by Evelyn Waugh and I must say I appreciate his wit and sense of humor. He likes to poke fun at the Brit upper-class, almost maliciously so, but it sure makes for damn good reading.

fun but disappointing

Brenda and Tony are a British couple with a decent amount of wealth. Oh, and they have a young son. A young son, that Brenda feels fine leaving at home while she scoots into London to galavant and socialize. While in London, she starts keeping the company of another gentleman who seems not that into her but still agrees to spend time with her.

This book had a certain dry humor to it. I don't believe that we were meant to like any of the characters. I read it more as a commentary of certain wealthy Brits of the time.
