Biting and silly tale of a happy husband and wife who realize they are actually quite oblivious and bored, respectively. Waugh leaves no character unscathed, though everyone gets a vacation at some point: to a broke estate for fox hunting, London for social calls, or the wilds of Brazil while drunk on tropical disease. Funny and clearly written in a state of depression--my favorite!

Somewhat atypical of Waugh's other satirical novels, A Handful of Dust has streaks of tragedy running throughout as can be seen through the story's obvious parallel to his own divorce which through him into turmoil. Partly autobiographical, the parallels between certain characters can be clearly seen in their real life counterparts and his attitudes towards them are easily ascertained. Waugh's travels in South America influenced part of the novel and helped describe other themes. He brilliantly satirizes various elements throughout such as secular humanism and the Church of England, which he describes as a joke.
