A Handful of Dust

This was readable but consistently sharp and cynical in a way I do not like and that does not spark joy. In the words of John Mulaney's Mick Jagger: NAWT FUNNAY!

evelyn waugh spent far too much time enjoying his own linguistic and stylistic charms (which i do appreciate) and lost sight of a good story in this one.. seemed to me like he got bored with what he started. perhaps this would be more appealing had it been my first waugh book.

I really to read this book again. I went into it expecting to hate it for some reason, but I ended up really enjoying it.

4 stars for 'Du Cote de Chez Todd', everything else - 3 stars.

British man is cuckold by his wife and goes to Brazil where he is forced to read Charles Dickens against his will. Hilarious and absurd.

3.5 ⭐️

Cynical, witty, cruel, dark, inconsistent, very british, snobby, pessimistic...and depending on which ending you read totally outlandish.

I think I would have enjoyed this more had I been in the right mood.

The takeaway here is that married women REALLY got short shrift back then... Though Tony is the cuckolded one, one wonders who the real victim in this divorce is when he can effectively starve his wife even though it’s her family money.

The twist!! The twist! The entire book was so enjoyable, then the twist. Tony's fate left me chilled and disturbed...perhaps because his fate awakens in me some of my own deep fears. Great read!
