A good first novel, emphasis on FIRST and GOOD. Sayers went on to write more complete, textured novels, set in her hometown of Beaufort, SC, AKA Due East. I like her later work better, but it's interesting to see her practice her craft in a less polished but heartfelt way. She's a terrific novelist who hasn't gotten the attention she deserves.
