Super confusing and poorly written. Three different storylines converging but not done well. I see the potential this Book had, but it was a little too muddled.

16 year old Georgia wants to be a model. When she steals money from her brother to get headshots done, it sets her life down a path no one should go down

Right out of the gate I was confused. And when I finally figured out what was going on, I didn’t like it.
The story was just ok, and the writing was disjointed and vague.
I felt that I was left to assume many things about the characters and settings, as a result, I feel I missed a lot of the story as I can’t be certain what the author was trying to put across.
It felt like instead of adding depth to the story, the book was relying on the shock of the murder to keep it interesting.

⚠️ This is a heavy book with enough TW’s to fill a whole other book.

This was a truly uncomfortable read that covers so many important things in today's world. This would have been four stars except for a few things. Georgia didn't make the best decisions which can be attributed to her concussion, but she wasn't making good decisions prior to the brain injury so I guess that's just what she does. The writing was choppy and I had to reread passages because suddenly the next paragraph took place hours, days or weeks in the future. I wasn't a fan of the romance because both girls were grieving over multiple traumas and it wasn't the right place for a relationship. Also, if Georgia's brother had been honest with her from the start then she would have been saved from a lot of trouble. Thank you Edelweiss for an ARC.

Why did I wait so long to read anything from Courtney Summers again??? I don't know but I definitely shouldn't have waited. This book had me holding on for dear life, it was grim, horrifying and overall had me shaking by the end but the characters were fantastic and so was the representation.

4.5 ☆ Ohmigod this book was — a lot. When Courtney Summers has a good concept, there is nothing preventing her from a banger of a book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and how it discussed such hard topics. I appreciated the perspective of the narrator to help the reader clearly understand the build up to the situation at hand.

Courtney Summers is ridiculously talented, to this DAY Sadie stays with me. I think I was expecting something...more? When the book ended, it felt like it was only half done. And I think on the one hand, it makes sense for the setting and for the situation and for the unfortunate reality of the world--but on the other hand, wouldn't it be satisfying to see it not played out that way?

Courtney Summers’s latest thriller, I'm the Girl, was a step back from the polished perfection of The Project and Sadie to me. It is certainly perfection in its realism but felt a little lacking in mystery and world development.

Georgia Avis is a very real sixteen-year-old girl, wanting to be loved, found attractive, and given a chance. Her naivete is on full display in this book, which can be hard for a grown reader to sit back and watch. Adults, especially men, take advantage of Georgia, but she slowly learns her power over them as well. She makes mistakes, trusts the wrong people, steals money, leaves the house when she shouldn’t… so, a normal teenage girl!

Following Georgia’s adventures felt like watching an episode of Euphoria. Good follows bad which follows good, and as the end approaches, you’re still unsure. In this case, the wrap up at the end left a lot to be desired – it is very abrupt and left me wanting closure on Georgia, her family, and friends.

If you like Courtney Summers, I imagine you will still like this book, just perhaps a little less than her other works. If you’re looking for casual young adult summer thriller, it might be better to look elsewhere. (see below for heavy content warnings). My thanks to NetGalley, Summers, and St. Martin’s Press/ Wednesday Books for an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
