This was so fabulously good. I was turned onto this book by the Horror Aficionado group as one of their group read for May, 2018. It isn’t, properly speaking, horror. It’s a mystery thriller that just happens to have a ghost as an integral supporting part of both the A and B plots. (A particularly scary ghost - if you ask me - named Mary Hand.)
This is one of those flip back and forth mysteries, where you are in 2014 for a chapter or two and then you are in 1950 for a chapter or two. Each story line follows a crime, both of which happened in the same location over 40 years apart.
Both mysteries were excellent and are wrapped up well in the end. I loved all the protagonists - 4 teenage girls in the 1950 story and a female reporter in 2014. They were alive, three dimensional, and compelling.
I couldn’t put this book down. I kept sneaking away from doing stuff with my kids to read a few more pages here and there. (So, I guess, warning- the book will make you a bad parent for a day or two.) But honestly, it was just that good.

this was our October 2025 book club pick over at RCB and i enjoyed this one as well. my favorite parts were the atmosphere and the mystery that the journalist slowly uncovered. the ghosts also didn't unnerve me too badly which was a win lol
it's really not working for me. I think the writing isn't good, and I just can't get into it
