I love putting all that Sunday school knowledge to use, made me go "huh!?!" a million times (sometimes in a good way), it's kind of giving gay, and it's a great book! Shoutout BTS for putting me on.
This was a difficult read. The melodrama drove me nuts. Maybe I'm just too old, and have forgotten my own youth. There were small passages that I vaguely remembered from the first time I read it. It helped to read the short bio and forward by Thomas Mann. It clarified the Freudian explorations and excessive self-examinations of the novel, and the Kafka-like feel. But I felt lacking in education to fully appreciate it. There were occasional passages that I understood -- the Buddhist passages in particular -- though it made me wonder about the difference in how Buddhism was practiced then and what has become American Buddhism. And it helped to come to understand that it was written just after the Great War, the War to End All Wars, WWI. Mostly, though, I found it strange and disturbing. That may have been partly influenced by recently reading "Drama of the Gifted Child", where that author used Hesse as examples of the impact a parent can have on a child.

i really really enjoyed this book! i wasn't sure what i would be getting myself into when i started, but by the end i felt so extremely attached that it was hard to let go of it. it was a rollercoaster of reflection and growth alongside the main character. it's so beautifully detailed and has such vivid imagery that i felt myself observing the main character like a ghost. it was an honestly beautiful read.

هیچ ادبیاتی مثل ادبیات آلمان در غرب از ادبیات و جهان‌بینی شرقی، از جمله ایران تأثیر نگرفته... شاید هسه یا توماس مان و... حافظ نخونده باشند اما از گوته و نیچه که هر دو تحت تأثیر ادبیات ایران و بالاخص حافظ بودند، تأثیر گرفتند... جدای از این‌ها کسانی مثل خود هسه یا شوپنهاور مستقیماً با جهان‌بینی هندی آشنا بودند... این‌ها رو گفتم تا بازگو کنم چقدر داستان‌های نویسندگان آلمانی در جهاتی می‌تونه با داستان‌های تمثیلی-عرفانی ما شباهت داشته باشه.
شخصی به نام ماکس دمیان (که ماهیتی نیمه مادی-نیمه تمثیلی داره) سر راه سینکلر قرار می‌گیره تا همچون شمس برای مولانا اون رو به حقیقت راهنمایی کنه و دقیقاً مثل مرید و مرادی ادبیات و فلسفه‌ی عارفانه، اینجا هم سینکلر حق سرکشی نداره و به محض اینکه سرکشی کوچکی دربرابر پیستوریوس (یکی دیگر از پیرهای طریقتش) ابراز می‌کنه، توسط او طرد می‌شه... همچون عارف‌های ما برای جستن حقیقت یا باید به رویاهاشون پناه ببرند، یا همچون مولانا دچار خلسه و سرمستی ازلی بشن و یا خودشون رو اسیر مستی و مدهوشی مادی بکنند و...
در آخر چیزی که برای من جالب بود این بود که چقدر تعبیری که هرمان هسه‌ی آلمانی از جنگ و برخورد مردمان در آغاز جنگ جهانی اول داره شبیه به برداشت مارتین دوگار فرانسوی تو کتاب «خانواده‌ی تیبو»ئه و این نشون می‌ده دهشتناکی جنگ جهانی اول هر دو طرف رو به یک شکل و میزان تحت تأثیر قرار داده، اون هم در صورتی که مردم هر دو جبهه با روی باز از جنگ استقبال می‌کردند.
