Really poor editing.
For a book that started with that unparalleled cliche of a character describing her appearance by waking up and looking in the mirror during the first scene, and which had a number of typos, I was actually impressed. Michaels gave North Korea a very generous two thousand years before they bombed the United States, and I'm still wondering how she predicted Donald Trump, even though she has considerably overestimated his intelligence. I guess it will forever remain a mystery.
Intense look at a post-apocalyptic America that has the age-old battle of us against them. I really enjoyed the gripping drama and action scenes. The main love triangle is a bit much but engrossing all the same. There were a bunch of errors but not distracting from the story. Looking forward to reading the rest.
A great short story that put me in the mindset of Hunger Games and Divergent but with more. The Bionics are the government's creation. After nuclear bombs were dropped in several major cities, the government created a program to help those injured. A couple of years later, the government wants them all to turn themselves in and give up what they gave them, no matter what quality of life, if they survive the removal, the people will have after. Seems the sky is the limit on what the scientists created (arms, legs, eyes, glands, etc.)and now they are scared of those very creations. So, the Bionics go into hiding and create a resistance movement.
With all this going on, a very tense love triangle is starting to form between Blythe, Dax, Gage. This was just an intro, so of course it has you wanting more and ends when things are really starting to get good.
Love the cover too. Sci-Fi is not my normal reads but I've been adding them to the mix and I'm glad I picked this one up.

Blythe and Dax are best friends, brought together by tragedy, heartache, and having titanium body parts. They're part of a Resistance of others like them, on the run from a government trying to decommission all the "Bionics," even if they're no threat whatsoever. Set in the distant future, bombs were dropped all across the U.S., and many survived the blasts and resulting fallout and other issues by replacing their damaged body parts with titanium/bionic ones. The government did this to help save lives, but then decided the "Bionics" couldn't be trusted anymore and created an initiative to get rid of them all. Our main characters are all fighting for their lives while trying to save others from meeting the same fate.
While this book might seem a little short, it definitely has a lot of information, and I found it extremely enjoyable. The tension created between Blythe and Dax when the new guy, Gage, is brought into their Resistance facility is almost palpable, and that, coupled with the problem of the government trying to kill them all makes for a great story. I can't wait to see how this series continues!

As other reviewers have mentioned, I had a hard time with the worldbuilding in this book. The setting is the year 4010, and yet all the geopolitical development is basically the same as today. The world of 2,000 years ago is barely recognizable today; I don't know why anyone would assume that 2,000 years from now, the world would be basically the same as it is at this moment. To me, it felt like the timeline was arbitrarily chosen, and that was fairly indicative of the book in general, where it seemed like choices were made not for the sake of realism or narrative consistency, but because they were decided at random without a lot of thought put into how it plays into the larger story. I found the premise really appealing, by the execution lacking.
I liked the concept and I enjoyed the set up but unfortunately this just seemed like the introduction to the book. Blythe is a likeable main character, but Dax annoyed me with his expectation that Blythe should be with him and getting angry with her when he hasn't even told her she loves him. Blythe is painted as the bad character in this love triangle quite undeservedly from what I can tell. just because Dax is her best friend and saved her life doesn't mean she owes him shit.
This story is pretty fast pace, with the government trying to capture and basically dismantle all the people who need their upgrades to survive. I like how each of the three main characters contribute to the story in their unique ways. I usually have a difficult time differing between POVs of the same gender while listening to an audiobook, but both Dax and Gage are so vastly different. I really appreciated that.

To be fair, I may not be the target audience for this book. Some of the ideas were good and the story line was good. However, after about 1/3 into the story, I got tired of teenager slang and psyche and gave it up.
