Every bit as good as the first book in the series, Wundersmith is an immersive, enchanting reading experience that is very much worthy of being pressed into the hands of children as an alternate option to Harry Potter.
This one moves along at a brisk clip, but atmosphere and world building never suffers. I love how Townsend weaves in exploration of themes such as otherness, found family and privilege, in an organic way. There’s attention paid to EVERYTHING - character development, sense of place, the magical elements, big ideas - which leaves the reader feeling so satisfied. And eager for book 3!

I'm still finding this series utterly charming, and need to stop forgetting it exists and finish the whole thing already!
The only thing that stopped it from being a full five stars is I really disliked one of the decisions Morrigan made in the course of the story. There are several times she makes dubious decisions, but generally the story brings her around to realize her error and set her right pretty quickly. This one is never really pointed out as an error, though she does (much later) make a decision that I feel sets right what she did wrong the first time.
