I think I’ll never be able to review a Junji Ito book without stating the obvious.. eerie and weird and twisted yet addictive and fun..

The plot was cool but I felt like it had potential to be a more fleshed out story than it was. I like that unlike some of Junji Ito's other works which are mostly short stories, this was one cohesive story comprised of the same characters from beginning to end.

A little too sci-fi for me & not as many shocking moments as usual. Not my fave of his by any means, but I still absolutely love his work ♡

This is my first Ito reading and I must admit I am not sure how I feel about it.
Yes, the drawings are crude and trippy, and it’s clear that the mix of gore and sci-fi is what makes Ito so easy recognizable.
However, I am left with the feeling that something major is missing - it’s like the absurd story, the weird characters and the trippy images are JUST that. It’s weird fiction for the weird’s sake, but there’s nothing to look for behind the gory surface.
Although my first thought was that I had approached this first read with the wrong mindset/expectation, reading the other reviews makes me think that Mr. Ito and I may have started on the wrong foot.
I’ll attempt reading other works.
