There are so many characters and separation in the characters stories until the way end that I couldn't remember them all and it was hard to keep track what happened to who.  That being said, this contemporary piece was so reflective and eye opening to the individual struggles of natives and even minorities as a whole. I really enjoyed that insight. I also just hated the ending was so vague that <spoiler!!!!!!!!> you can't even tell if half the characters die or not! Ugh.

i really want to like this book; it was hard to follow but felt accomplishing as all the pieces mostly were put together. the surplus of characters were tricky to keep track of and feel connected to. it was partially because of this i felt a bit frustrated by the writing style at times - i felt it was tedious and repetitive as some characters seemed excessive since they didn’t get closure in the book. it was also an extremely dark, graphic, and sad read. however i cannot say i didn’t like the book. i appreciate the wide range of native perspectives given as an insight to the culture, especially through an urban lens. and this book will definitely stick with me for a long time.

I found the book a little hard to follow and found myself caring for some characters far more than others and because I was invested in their stories I was left wanting more from them. The others just added noise and confusion. However this was enjoyable, I just would have liked it to be more refined and develop the end more as it kind of just left me gobsmacked with not much reflection or processing or answers. The book had also come highly recommended and for me didn’t live up to that which is a shame because I like multi-perspective/generational books, this just tried to do too much.

I am interested to see what he writes next, and I'll definitely be interested to read other stuff. He writes about an overlooked community, and presents important themes. However, there were so many people and I didn't feel invested in many or clear on their motivations. They felt like props in the overall message about the cycles of harm in the Native community to me. In all that there were some story lines and moments that were very compelling though and again this did seem like a very unique book to me so I'm still giving it a 3.5.
