I think this book is one of those reads that I’ll need to reflect on for a while to understand its full effect. Tommy Orange has such a strong voice and uses inventive and intensely visual and sensory language. I personally found the multiple perspectives a little difficult to keep straight (and appreciated the cast of characters at the front; I referred back to it often) and
I understand why Orange opted for a violent ending, but especially given what’s going on in the news right now, it was disappointing and hard to take in.
Nonetheless, I think this was a great place to start for me to read more Indigenous stories, and it explores an often ignored community—Urban Indigenous groups—in a very complex and full way.

Beautifully written without being overly intellectual. It's extremely readable while still feeling ~literary~ in many ways. Full of dark humor, rich characters who feel real and alive. Not particularly uplifting so don't go into it expecting that. But it feels like an incredibly important book. I found myself wishing I was reading it in a class. I wanted someone super smart to tell me all about how brilliant it was. As casual reading, it was good, but I knew that close reading and examination would have really brought out it's true brilliance.

There are so many characters and separation in the characters stories until the way end that I couldn't remember them all and it was hard to keep track what happened to who.  That being said, this contemporary piece was so reflective and eye opening to the individual struggles of natives and even minorities as a whole. I really enjoyed that insight. I also just hated the ending was so vague that <spoiler!!!!!!!!> you can't even tell if half the characters die or not! Ugh.
