Not for everybody's taste, hectic to see it from a child's perspective, a book that keeps your mind occupied for a while.

I will write a longer review at a later time.

This is the first book in a long time where I actually cried at the end because I was just that attached to the narrator. At first I was really annoyed by the narrator because he is a five year old child, and I felt like I was having flashbacks to when my son was an argumentative five-year-old, but the story is compelling enough that I was easily able to not only adjust to, but enjoy, the narrative choice.

I like to reread this book every year. This time, I tried the audiobook which was so good.

I thought this book was going to be disturbing, dark, and hard to get through. That was the impression I got from reviews, anyway. The book was not really any of those things. I think above all else, this book was ultimately about love and the unparalleled relationships/bond between mother and child. It was a sad book, yes. But if you got the same impression I did and are avoiding it for those reasons, don't. It's a good read.

Interesting concept, language rather grownup for a 5 year old!

Dark subject, definitely has some flaws, but overall a satisfying read.

I liked reading it but I didn't like how suddenly it ended. I felt like there should be more at the end. I'm still wrapping my head around it.

I was expecting to feel all the horror of two people held against their will - but I didn't. Jack as a narrator was unconvincing. The escape was implausible. The second half of the book was better but not great. Many of the scenes 'outside' were unrealistic; who would let a traumatised child that knows only his Ma stay with grandparents he's only met days before! It could have been an incredibly engaging novel but it fell flat.
