Clever, witty and wonderfully meta. Anthony Horowitz continues this series, both as author and character. As he chronicles the cases of retired police detective Hawthorne, he playfully becomes his own creation. Mysteries are never what they seem and the face of evil.is sometimes delightfully bland. Pressured by his publishing house to write the 3rd book about Hawthorne, both he and Hawthorne take off to appear at a tiny literary festival where the descriptions of the other participants are cogent and pungent. Once the mystery takes off, pay close attention. I guarantee you'll will enjoy the outcome.

These books really hold up as I keep reading them. I had guessed who the killer was and how certain details of the crime scene related to it, but I never saw the link. I was very surprised by the ending and as we continue I’m very interested in Hawthorne’s past but it seems like it’s going to traumatic. Very much enjoyed this. Will be moving on to book 4.

4 ⭐️ I really enjoyed this installment! I partially figured out the ending but there were a few bits that I missed. The Hawthorne/Horowitz dynamic in this book was really entertaining and it gave the story some much needed humor.
Another page turner.
And the book that took me over my total from last year! My 69th book of 2024.

I got this book on netgalley, and, as others have said, I spent the first 1/4 of this book thoroughly confused about what was going on as the author is a main character in the book, which - without any context - just was really weird. I also didn’t realise that this was the 2nd or 3rd book in a series, which didn’t help.
Once I got into it and figured out what was going on I actually quite enjoyed it. Like others, I had guessed some of what was going on before the end but not the ins and outs fully.
So, a bit of a mixed bag all in all. It was a bit of a shame because I really like Anthony Horrowitz’s work and I love crime fiction so I should have enjoyed this more than I did!

The third installment in the Hawthorne & Horowitz series was as fun as the last two novels in the series. These books are hard intriguing and hard to put down.
Very few authors can write themselves into their own stories as an author and narrator.... I think the only other novel I have read where an author has done that was Stephen King's Gunslinger series. It is a fun and unique concept.
I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
