This series is SO fun. The way Horowitz is also a character in the book is wonderful. I hope this series continues for so many more books, even if in the story world it's a trilogy.

A book convention turns into a murder investigation. With several twists until the real killer is identified. A book that will keep you guessing and keep you reading to find out who did it.

Pretty solid. But probably not as good as some of Horowitz's other mystery novels.

Okay, I'm sorry but I just don't get all the praise for this book. I have liked Anthony Horowitz's books in the past which is why I read this, even though I did not especially like either of the other books in this series. I am completely bored by that Hawthorne character, he is taciturn and rude and I see nothing remotely interesting about him. He is given Holmes-like powers of observation that in this book were poorly done, didn't even make sense. The situation...a closed-circle mystery set at a book fair on a Channel Island, should have been atmospheric, but was not at all. The characters were cliched, the victim you spot instantly. And I knew from the second she was introduced that the blind woman
Spoilerwas not really blind! What a shock! And of course then it would have been TOO obvious for her to be the killer as well, (and naturally Hawthorne alone noticed her ability to see) so the killer had to be the other least obvious person, the one who flies under the radar.
. The motive for the crime was idiotic, to say the least, but then of course the killer
Spoilerwho you are supposed to feel sort of sorry for, will not go to jail because she is, say it with me, conveniently terminally ill!
.
Anthony Horowitz CAN write a decent book. This is not it.

3.5. But I didn’t figure it out and I feel foolish that I hadn’t even considered the character as a suspect

leuk ander concept voor mijn favoriete soort boek (mensen worden vermoord op een eiland) maar ik vond hem een beetje rommelig uiteindelijk… niet super spectaculair in ieder geval

adventurous funny mysterious fast-paced

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I did the others in the series. I think the novelty of what is essentially a self-insert fic (in fan fiction) has kind of worn off a bit. I would have given it 2.5 if I could. I think my main issue with it is that the writer/narrator/author comes across as a bit smug in this one. Which would be fine as unlikeable characters are not necessarily a barrier to my enjoyment of the book but I think because almost all the characters were unlikeable, it made the book a bit of a slog. I also guessed the killer early on and thought some of the mis-direction was really clumsy.

I will probably read the rest of the series but I won't go into them as excited as I was before.

3.5 You know what you're getting with these books and you wouldn't get it if you didn't want it.
