Horowitz really knows how to pull you along in this series. In that Sherlock/Watson way, Horowitz tries to piece together all the clues that he and Hawthorne see but the resolution to the crime remains a puzzle to him. Ex-Inspector Hawthorne, on the other hand, has a memory for the tiniest of detail and is able to hold all the facts in his head.
This time, the murder is committed on the channel island of Alderney during a literary festival. H&H are there to present their first book collaboration, [b:The Word Is Murder|36204075|The Word Is Murder (Hawthorne and Horowitz Mystery, #1)|Anthony Horowitz|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1513811404l/36204075._SY75_.jpg|54695752], when a gruesome murder takes place. Hawthorne takes on the investigation, with Horowitz taking copious notes, until the local police authorities arrive. Everyone is a suspect. Everyone has a motive. Everyone has an alibi.
For the first time ever, I solved the mystery before it was spelled out. Although I hadn't pieced together all the details that Hawthorne recounts, I suspected the correct murderer around 60% through. Bravo me!
I listened to the audio version and I truly enjoyed Rory Kinnear's acting - again. Ideally this series should be read in order since there is a sub-plot line linking them all together - and an enormous open loop at the end of this one.

I just love this series. This one is a little lower rated for me, because I was exhausted by the self deprivation and disrespect the author was expressing and experiencing throughout the story… it felt more emphasized in this novel, compared to the others.
Hawthorn gives off strong Sherlock Holmes vibes and I am here for it!

i really like a lot of Horowitz's work, but this series is meh. there's actually nothing wrong with it...decent story, decent writing, but i find it weird that the author writes himself into the novels.
Как всегда отлично написанный детектив от Хоровитца. Не такой увлекательный, как The sentence is death, но все равно отлично скрасил мой вечер.

I do love this series, it’s so clever that he put himself in the story. I deducted a point for some old fashioned views about trauma

This is my second full Hawthorne and Horowitz book (The Word is Murder I only read the beginning of as a sample, and was hooked... I really must read it fully), and I love them. I love the author as character aspect. I love Tony sucking just as much as his readers at solving crimes. I love each breadcrumb about Hawthorne, knowing it may take many more books to see a full loaf.
The main question is.... What's the next title.
