A really satisfying read overall. Interesting plot with an ending that both tied things up in a really fulfilling way, whilst also leaving a pressing question about Hawthorne's ever elusive backstory. Again another read where I kept wincing on behalf of poor Tony. Guy needs to stand up for himself and stop paying for all the other characters.

3.5⭐️/5⭐️

I love this series so much and cannot wait for the next installment, but this one was a 3.5⭐️ for me. I enjoyed it, but the murder doesn’t even happen until 1/3 of the way in and the plot wasn’t quite as strong as the others in the series.

I had enjoyed the first two books in this series and finally got back to it. This one was fine but took me a while to get through (while book #4 was binged in a day). Mostly the obstacle was that Rory Kinnear (who I ADORE) decided to make any soft-spoken character completely unintelligible. And he made a lot of characters soft-spoken. I tend to listen to audiobooks on 2x speed or 1.75x. I had to slow this one down to 1.25x and I STILL couldn't understand some of the lines. So I got the physical book out of the library to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

So...that made it a hard listen. But the mystery was also not as engaging as the other books. The whole idea of the protesting against the electrical line because it would ruin property values, destroy views, and DISTURB THE GRAVES OF VICTIMS OF THE NAZIS, was interesting but also felt like a really serious and important topic that...just ended up not being relevant.

I was glad the reveal was less politically motivated and more that Anne killed Charles because he created the gambling site that got her son addicted and caused him to kill himself. Her killing Helen made less sense because...she was a spokesmodel.

I also figured that maybe Charles had bullied or hazed her son (as we heard about from Mark) and that led to his suicide. But, the gambling aspect felt unnecessary.

But it was an engaging enough book, just not on the same level as the rest of the series in my opinion.

While technically written very well, this one bored me to tears.
