When I requested this audio I didnt know it was book 4 in a series but you would of had no idea this can be read as a stand alone which is always good.
Leyla Breda lives in a small town where her brothers are both cops so she knows its not as safe in her small town. But when one morning one of her employees are found dead at her shop shes in the focus of a murder and she also does some digging of her own to see if she can find anything else.
Like all mystery's/thrillers I don't like to give anything away. This was a sold 3 star read with some romance with trying to find out the mystery of the murder.
Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media, for providing me with this audibook ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Laura Griffin has become a go to author for me when I need a solid and reliable mystery/thriller. I haven't read all of the books in this series, and I was able to follow the plot of this one without any trouble even though it is the 4th book in the series. I thought the pacing was well done, and the plot unfolded in a realistic way. I love the elements of romance thrown in that don't overwhelm the action of the story. The characters were well developed, and I will definitely check out more of this series to get more backstory on some of them as well as to see what is next!
I wasn’t as into the love interest in this book as I have been in the other ones. This series is entertaining but this one hasn’t been my favorite.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. This book provided in exchange for an honest review.
While this book is the fourth in a series, it can be read as a standalone.
After Layla discovers her employee murdered in the alley behind her coffee shop, she decides to begin investigating her death. Sean, is her brother’s best friend and an undercover FBI agent on an undercover assignment. When Sean and Leyla’s investigations overlap, they begin stepping on each other’s toes, and find themselves in danger.
I found the beginning of the story to be quite intriguing, but around the middle I started losing interest. I had a difficult time getting invested in any of the characters, (I may have been more attached if I had read the others in this series). To follow the characters, I started a list and took notes to remember details.
The chemistry between Layla and Sean felt insta-lovey, and forced. I don’t know that it was a necessary component, and I may have enjoyed the book more without it.
The narrator did mispronounce the county examiners office. In Texas, Bexar county is pronounced Bear. Unfortunately this pulled me out of the world quite a bit.
I can see the appeal of this book to others, but it wasn’t for me.

I’ve enjoyed listening to the Texas Murder Files series this week. We’ve been hearing about Leyla in the previous books so I was glad we get her story this time! She’s the sister of two local cops when enter Sean, an FBI agent investigating the murder that took place in Leyla’s bakery. Romantic suspense can be a tricky genre— there’s murder, there’s danger, there’s romance!
This series has done a great job balancing that edge.
Kudos to the narrator for maintaining the tone throughout all 4 books!

Leyla Breda is beside herself when the body of one of her employees was found behind her coffee shop. Leyla soon meets Sean Moran. He is in law enforcement as are her two brothers. However, Sean is vague about why he is in town and how long he will be around.
Meanwhile, Leyla has every intention at keeping her work going, and this includes catering jobs. One of her potential clients just might be part of the reason that Sean is in town. In fact, as an FBI agent, he is getting closer to solving his current case. There is definitely going to be a conflict between Leyla and Sean as he tries to keep his job separate from his personal life, but that is complicated by the fact that he is very drawn to her.
Perhaps the two will team up, and for more reasons than one. Sean has an important role in this story, but then so does the detective Nicole, who is striving to solve the murder. This intriguing story was an excellent page Turner, with mystery, drama and the chemistry between Leyla and Sean. I look forward to yet another book in this exciting series.
Many thanks to Berkley and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Let's be real, if you've seen my videos or read my reviews before, you know Laura Griffin is one of my go-to authors for romantic suspense. I love her writing and I love her stories, and this was no different.
Sean is an undercover FBI agent and Leyla is a coffee shop owner (from previous books! We love seeing familiar faces!) who doesn't take shit from anyone. Their love story is fast paced and fun, and I enjoyed every bit of it!
You already know I'll read whatever she writes next.

This suspense filled, murder mystery is a captivating story. Leyla Breda is a bakery/coffee shop owner and caterer. She is devastated to find one of her employees murdered behind her shop. She has brother's who are police officers so she knows the score. But when a man she met and had a connection with at her brother's wedding is interested in the murder, Layla can't help but become involved. Sean Moran is an FBI agent, on a case of his own. He is friends with Leyla's brother and is attracted to his sister. When his case starts to intersect with what happened at Leyla's shop, he wants to protect her from the dangerous men he is looking for. But Leyla has a mind of her own, finding information that could help, but also puts her in extreme danger. Will Sean be able to take down this crime ring and protect Leyla before they find her? This was a gripping story with a steamy romance and plot twists that will have you on edge trying to figure out what will happen next. Not only do we meet Leyla and Sean and want them to find a way to be together, but we meet the lead detective, Nicole, and Emmett and their contentious relationship leaves me wanting more of them.
Teri Clark Linden is a new narrator to me and I really enjoyed her performance. She picked the perfect tone for this story and easily delivered all the emotion, and heart pounding suspense, making this story even more captivating. I will definitely look for more of her work.
I have always loved Griffins stories and I enjoyed this mystery/romantic suspense as well.

This was an okay read.
The synopsis really intrigued me and the romance seemed like it was going to be good too so I was super excited to read this. Unfortunately I didn’t feel like this delivered on its promise.
The mystery is very slow paced with no sense of urgency and multiple dead ends. 70% and there was still no hint at who the culprit was. I would have liked a more fast paced mystery.
The romance needed more time. I felt they didn’t spend enough time together to like each other beyond lust. I didn’t buy that these two were in love by the end of the book. Definitely a HFN kind of ending.
I did like the writing itself and the setting. The book also seemed well researched. I did like the characters too.
Overall, my main issue was pacing and the romance not being developed enough for my tastes. If you’re looking for a quick beach read this will suffice.
Rating: 3/5
