This one was better than the silent patient and I didn’t think I’d say that.
while this book wasn’t BAD, it also wasn’t good. i felt manipulated by the narrative and by the author. the twist at the end felt like a desperate attempt at shock value, but it lacked substance. the silent patient was successful in creating a true twist that still chills me to this day. it was clear that the author felt pressure to create a second book that was as good as his first, and to put it bluntly, i think he tried too hard. the best and most compelling parts of the book were the parts that tied the silent patient in.
slow-paced
I did not like this book at all. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters, the story seemed a bit random, and the whole thing just seemed ludicrous. I mean, Mariana is not very good at her job judging by her behaviour in this story, poking around at crime scenes and falling out with police detectives when she isn’t even involved in the case, professionally or non. And then there’s the farce about the Maidens… I think this book is made out to be something spectacular when it really isn’t. And that’s all I can say about it.

If goodreads would let us go half stars it would be 3.5. The ending helped it. But took me forever to read this one well the beginning did. Flew thru the last half.
3-4 stars. Less of an intense crime than I usually like. Was thinking if the murderer was who I thought it may be I would have been disappointed. But it was a good twist that’s shocked me. Enjoyed the author just not what I usually reach for.
