Graphic: Death, Mental illness, Blood, Grief
Moderate: Pedophilia, Toxic relationship
alex michaelides write mentally ill characters well nd dont demonise them constantly challenge (impossible) if i could give this less than 1 star, trust me i would. -300000 stars this was god awful. at least it represented the british mental health services well, it really portrayed them as fucking useless but thinking theyre god-sends. alex if we ever meet in real life im giving you a 30 second headstart to start running
Overall the first 2/3 of the book had me pretty captivated trying to figure out who did it. However the last 1/3 felt almost rushed and lackluster. I think the person who did it was a clever choice but the reasoning behind was disappointing. It sort of came out of left field. Even though there was the few chapters written in what we assume is the killers first person narrative instead of our protagonists third person, when finding out about who those chapters belong to were a little disappointing.
With that being said I think the writing itself was brilliant Michaelides does a great job in transporting the reader to the scene, I’ll definitely be picking up more of his works in the future.

This book really surprised me! The first 100 pages were not that interesting and I was a bit meh about it, but then it picked up and I really enjoyed the rest of the novel.
First of all, I had absolutely no idea this book had connections to one of his other books! It was so fun to see the other characters be referenced and to see how the new ones fit into the story. The main character was somewhat unreliable, but you still felt connected to her because of her grief and her experiences. You felt sorry for her and really empathised with her, and this was just further deepened throughout the novel. She may have had her own issues, but she didn’t deserve what happened in the book. Also, the plot was just really unique and I loved it. It was all mysterious vibes and you didn’t know who to trust.
The setting was amazing! I really felt the dark academia vibe that the book gave off and the descriptions just gave me such a vivid idea of the setting. It truly felt like I was there, experiencing the story with the characters. This was due to the writing which was just addicting. Once I got over the introductory sort of chapters, the tension and suspense was just built so beautifully that I could not stop reading. I just needed to find out what was happening. And I could not have guessed the twist. I could see at the end how the twist fit in, and all the little hints dropped in, but I did not expect it at all. It has been the same in his other novels and I just really enjoy his writing and his ability to twist your mind and deliver the unexpected.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and the writing. I would recommend to anyone looking for something a little different and for someone who enjoys dark academia set novels!
