I tried to give this book a fair chance, I really did, but I could only force myself to read 50 pages. The writing style is not for me. There is a lot of info dumping at the beginning, telling not showing, and overall juvenile writing. I get that the main character is 16, but her narration makes her seem much younger. The dialogue often only serves the purpose of delivering information, rather than flowing naturally. The part I did read was also just overall boring. Maybe the plot gets better. But the writing most likely will not in my mind.

It was alright. I thought at some moments it was slow and the characters were sometimes confusing to follow

Lots of fun to read, but the ending was infuriating... I need closure, bestie.

“There is a world in which Mr. Ellis is not held accountable for his actions, and there is a world in which he is dead. What if there is no world in between?”

"Very Bad People" offers a compelling young adult mystery set in an elite boarding school, blending a present-day mystery with a haunting past. The story maintains a nice pace, keeping readers intrigued until the end. However, while initially promising, the conclusion left much to be desired. The protagonist, Calliope, seeks solace from her past in her new school but finds herself entangled in a secret society, leading to unforeseen consequences. While it keeps a nice pace, the ambiguous ending and poor character development detract from the overall experience.

Content warnings: death of a parent (in the past, but also there's flashbacks), grief, murder, teacher/student relationship, grooming, bullying, cheating, mentions of suicide, car accident (in the past, but also there's flashbacks), drowning

I wanted to love this, but ultimately I think there was just a little too much going on??? Like, there's the dead mum plotline and everything that goes along with it. There's the secret society fighting for social justice plotline. And then there's the teacher plotline. And I don't really feel like any of them were handled to a sufficient level of satisfaction.

So yeah. It was FINE. And I did really enjoy the way that the plotline around her mum played out. But the rest of it kiiiiiiind of lost me tbh.
