The art was wonderful.
I don't think I was the intended audience though. The story was not engaging and there were too many characters. For all of Civil War II's faults, it kept a focus on core characters while juggling in background extras.

The biggest thing wrong with this book is its only a very small part of the story. In a major event, the bulk of the story should take place here with tie-ins filling in the blanks. This seemed the opposite. This was supposed to be THE big shake-up in the Marvel Universe. I did not get any of that here. I don't know how we got the new characters here. Just picking this up to read gives the reader no insight as to what had happened or will happen. The story itself is not bad, just incomplete. The art work is top notch and at times stunning. The art was very compelling in telling the story as a whole here. It really saved the story.

I'm not sure if I just wasn't plugged enough into the state of Marvel ca. 2015 or if this is a little shoddy, but I'm leaning toward the latter. There are character reveals that wind up not really mattering. Plot developments that happen "offscreen." Twists that are in no way predictable (i.e., they come out of absolutely nowhere). There are interesting ideas at work (Doom is god: cool) but they never really gel into a coherent story. Likewise, some great visuals that are, unfortunately, not supported by the story they're trying to tell.
Having heard on the grapevine that this might form the basis of the second infinity war film I thought I'd give it a go. Well here's hoping any film makes a better job of this story.
This was not good it has to be said. The set up for the story was needlessly complicated and didn't really improve as it went on.
Very much the worst of the Marvel event stories I'm sad to say.

While I really enjoyed this story, there was a lot of required lead-in reading and knowledge of the Marvel Universe that, while fine for a life-long reader like me, probably leaves newcomers to the universe completely confused and befuddled. I don't want to post spoilers, but this book plays off of about fifty years of Marvel history and doesn't take the time to explain it to readers, so if you're in on the info then great, and if not, well, at least you'll probably enjoy the art.
