Turgenev writes with great sensibility in flowing prose that I couldn't stop reading, about complex uncontrolled passions and its violent excitements and torments, and a changed view of life for Vladimir. The exhilaration of love, the intolerable and unyielding fervour of love...
I very much enjoyed the comedy - when the men, all her many suitors, are first introduced and described; or when Zinaïda imagines a story of a queen with a lot of suitors, who are all very much in love with the woman, and tell what they would do in a situation where they come across her fictional lover.
I also rarely laugh openly when reading... '- a man appeared - O God, it was my father!' is a prime example, then i was flooded with 'O God', then it became slightly more humorous again... 'Jealous Othello, ready for murder, was suddenly transformed into a schoolboy…'
I must admit that I saw the affair between Zinaïda en Vladimir’s father from miles away, but that didn’t make this beautiful story any less enjoyable. What I did found bothersome though, was that his father being abusive toward Zinaïda was written as acceptable (despite it being normalised during that time period) and as something you endure for love. While it sounded like Zinaïda very much enjoyed it, the description or Vladimir’s interpretation rubbed me the wrong way.

I am, as a general rule, a great advocate of hot girls girlbossing too close to the Sun. Sadly, this case in point managed to grind my gears in all the wrong ways.
