Clementine Ford gives a thorough history of how patriarchy and the Christian churches have used the institution of marriage to keep women in line. In more recent times where women are legally able to work and own property and therefore are less dependent on marriage, the campaign has instead turned to selling marriage as an extension of true love, whereby women are deficient if they don't achieve it, by choice or otherwise. Ford inspires women to aspire to more for themselves.
This book pairs well with Abolish the Family by Sophie Lewis- both books argue that the nuclear family is upheld to make people only care for their biological family and not their wider communities. Abolishing marriage and the family would mean that everyone is taken care of regardless of their romantic and family circumstances. We would then be free to enjoy romances and have children or seek out other pursuits instead as we desire, free of financial coercion to do so.
