4.5 stars - I am surprised by how much I enjoyed this book since its not a genre that I typically read. However, it is about found family which is one of my favorite themes. The setting, the characters backstories, and their relationships are beautiful. A feel good story that gives you that mushy, warm feeling. Definitely a winner for me.

Overall I enjoyed this book. I was hoping that the magic realism would play a bigger role than it did. I also agree with many readers that the book felt too short. Character development was a little lacking just due to the short length of the book. In addition, at times, the main character made the story feel more like a YA novel. Nevertheless, I liked the story and it was a fairly quick read.

I loved this book. Eclectic group of characters who’s secrets are entangled by ghosts and weird birds. Lots of heartache but also lots of healing in finding a family with people who love you!
This book was fine, but it felt so distant up until the last few chapters. I wish I could have made more of a connection to the characters earlier on. The ending was cute, but it felt so rushed to gather up all the loose ends and tie them up really quickly.
