This was a solid strong with great heart. The characters have all been bruised but find ways to create a found family to help heal the wounds of their lives. Threads of lives intertwining in such interesting ways. They had good depth without getting us lost in the darkness of it all.

My partner and I read books out loud to each other, and a week after finishing this book, he told me he missed the book and all the people in it. It is magical realism meets Americana, and it holds the optimism and connection I love most in literature. The world is lovely, vibrant, and touching, and I wish I could read it for the first time again!
Overall a light and comforting feel good read that gives a softer take on some traditionally darker themes including ghosts, death and past trauma. Not particularly gripping or fast paced plot, just a warm, cozy feelings book.
Good
Nineteen year old Zoey has left home for college, and is spending the summer in the apartment her mother left her.
Twenty-six year old Charlotte is running from a past that continues to haunt her.
Mac is a chef who has trouble with goodbyes.
Frasier is in charge of the Dellawisp apartments, where they all live. The death of a long term resident is the catalyst that brings them all together, giving them the opportunity to start anew…
I love the whimsical nature of Sarah Addison Allen’s books, the comfortable coziness of the characters, and the ‘down home’ nature of the story.
This particular book, set in the Gullah country of South Carolina, is really about dealing with the past, and learning to let it go.
The characters are interesting, with back stories that the book explores well. Interspersed with tales from others who have left their marks on one or more of the Dellawisp residents.
I can’t say much without exposing the twists and turns in the story, but it’s a tale that more than holds its own with the other beautiful books by the author.
Other birds is a whimsical tale, with a slight hint of the paranormal about it. It’s a wonderful addition to the libraries of fans of the author, and an enchanting story for those who want a cosy read.
