This is the story about a girl sacrificed on the altar of literary genius. Springora's memoir tells her twisted coming of age as the teenage mistress of a much older writer, with the tacit approval of a whole society around her. This is a story about hypocrisy and injustice, about the excuses we made, and still make, for predatory behaviour when the perpetrator is a man who's charming enough. It's also the story of a woman reclaiming her own voice, and as such it's powerfully written. I love memoirs with a strong authorial voice, and this really hits the spot. Even given the subject matter, it's so sharply written with some lovely turns of phrase; I couldn't put it down.
