Love these books, and so does my 6 year old.

I loved this as a kid. I was so impressed by Ozma and her transformation and it really felt good for me as a non-binary child. Now as an adult I was so annoyed by so many things like the girl army.

Putting aside the classic status of the first one, this sequel holds together better just as a book. (I read a different edition than the one listed, but it should be substantially the same.) The story is more interesting, the humor lands better, and there's a more solid narrative structure versus the first book's largely unrelated series of vignettes. Because of the era, there's an odd combination of inherent sexism with a surprisingly progressive amount of female agency with the Army of Revolt plotline.

Because this is an Oz book, expect animal cruelty, all sorts of other casual violence, and normalization of jackbooted authoritarian rule. The flying monkeys remain enslaved and everyone thinks it's great. Read the book but don't move to Oz.

It’s a bit dated for today, and I’m no Oz scholar, but I just finished reading this one to my child. He enjoyed it, and questions such as how to interpret the Army of Revolt or how to see the character of Tip are best left to more educated scholars of this series.
Some of the humor is actually way beyond that of a preschooler or small child and I found myself laughing out loud!
