Alright so I only read this because of Dorothy must die. I like seeing how it all fits in and overlaps each other. Wasn't essential but it was alright.

Just kind of a generally inferior version of the first book. Most of the characters are less interesting, excepting the returning Tin-Man and Scarecrow. The adventure itself seems more chaotic and less fantastical then the previous book. Also there's some weird gender stuff in here that upon further research I don't think Baum *meant* in bad faith, but it kinda reads as such.

I suggest going to read the currently ongoing webcomic "Yellow Brick Ramble", it's a much more interesting version of this story and it may even not have the Woggle-bug! I hated the Woggle-bug.

Aimless and mean-spirited. The returning characters are unrecognizable.

I actually think I loved this book more than I loved the first one! It was exciting and unexpected and the characters were cute and funny (old and new). The Gump, H.M Wogglebug, T.E, Jack Pumpkinhead, they were all delightful in their own way. I admit that I saw the twist at the end coming, but I think that's mostly because I was spoiled about it a long time ago and it just stuck with me, and it in no way detracted from the story for me.

And we need to talk about General Jinjur. Seriously, why is no one talking about General Jinjur??? I loved her! I know she was probably meant to be some kind of awful parody concerning feminism and women's suffrage (which was well into its stride when this book was being written ;P), but I just loved everything about her! Let's go take over the Emerald City with knitting needles! Why? Because we CAN, that's why! The General is one of those people who does not ask why, but rather why not. She knows what she wants and she goes for it. Mad respect for General Jinjur, I don't care what anybody says, girl was legitimately the best part of the book ;)

This is the 2nd book in the Oz series. I had never thought to read the others, until I read the Reading Promise by Alice Ozma. In this book you meet a few new characters:Tip, Jack the Pumpkinhead, etc. The series was written in the 1900s. The characters are just wonderful, thoughtful and funny. Considering I didn't like the movie version of the Wizard of Oz, I am finding the books likeable.
