Complicated, conflicting feelings about this one. On one hand, critically important message and a fascinating premise that was mostly really well-written. On the other hand, some of the characters felt really under-developed, and some of the twists were so extreme, they were just unbelievable. Loved Devon, could never get myself to root for Chiamaka.

might adjust to 5 stars. i wish i could say what part of this book makes it a five star bc even in my head i feel like it deserves it. but there was something that i felt was lacking im the last part. EVERYTHING ELSE THOUGH?!?! absolutely perfection. it’s crazy that this is a debut novel. it’s so thought provoking and had me at the edge of my seat the entire time! gossip girl meets get out in a dark academia setting.

while it was mostly predictable for me, it was nonetheless enjoyable. Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé does an excellent job of examining institutional racism with a frank eye. i felt a bit more connected to devon than chiamaka, but they were both likable. it was mostly fast-paced and quick to read, i didn't feel like it dragged at any parts.

i think this would make an excellent film adaptation.
