Basically, this was a biography about Shakespeare that's sole purpose was to continually state that there is very little factual information we actually know about Shakespeare. I never would've thought it would take 200 pages to say that we know next to nothing about him. I found this book to be more informative on the times and society in which Shakespeare lived rather than on Shakespeare himself. Although I must admit that Bryson does make several good points with regards to Shakespeare's language and his talents and abilities within the world of the theater.
Interesting book! Bill clearly states what is known about Will's life with wit and his usual easy way of writing.

Bill Bryson is a versatile writer who has done not only travel but also histories that are lovely bits of information usually laced with some good laughs. Since I am an historian of Tudor England, this was a fun dip back in that time period. I do wish he would continue to add the laugh out loud humor that was so forthcoming and made me a fan while reading "Notes From a Small Island," since I've read more than enough dull history in my academic career. Eddie Izzard is one who does so well pointing out the ridiculous things that happen in history. While this book did have brilliant moments of good-natured humor, there were too long stretches without a break. It made me remember that the character who said, "To thine own self be true," can actually be considered comedic or a buffoon, not a wise old sage as everyone loves to make that quote sound. In reality, how many things does it/could it really mean out of the mouth of Polonius?
Bill Bryson never disappoints! Very entertaining and enlightening!
An excellent book that provides the historic evidence for what is known about Shakespeare, and in so doing an interesting look at Elizabethan and Jacobean England. The book also gives you an understanding of how hard it is to penetrate that far into the past to learn the details of a single individual's life, or the architectural details of a theater.

This should be a companion book in every class that covers Shakespeare. Wonderful.
