The arrival of Freya, blonde, beautiful and utterly charming, stirs things in the otherwise peaceful Hawking. She befriends 17 year old Low, a teenager who otherwise has difficulties connecting with people who label her as weird due to her parents' polyamorous relationship. And after that, also Jamie, a gift shop keeper who has recently fallen victim to a surrogate scam. For both of them Freya becomes the centre of their universe, and their friendship utterly priceless. However, things become more complicated when Freya and Jamie swap husbands for the night.
In what I see as typical Robyn Harding fashion after recently reading 'The Arrangement', this is a story about obsession. Freya lives for it, as she was forcefully pulled away from her influencer world when her husband was accused of killing another man. She enjoys having others fawn over her, and it is definitely interesting to see how quickly her face changes from asshole to master manipulator. She's definitely an intriguing main character, but this only becomes a thriller later in the book. For the most part, I just thought this read as complicated relationships than anything more sinister.
I do like Robyn Harding's books, they're easy to read, page-turning and fun, even though they don't provide a whole lot of food for thought. But there are always psychological and interpersonal dynamics that are compelling to read about and little mysteries that are gradually revealed, even if they might not be of huge value. For example, we know that there is a strain in Freya and Max's marriage, but not sure why because they put up the appearance of the perfect couple. But it is that important for the main storyline? I'd argue not really, but I'll let you find that out for yourself.
