My Mini Thoughts

Freya is an Instagram Influencer who moves to the Pacific Northwest island for peace and quiet after her hockey player husband injures another player during a game. It’s here she meets Low/Swallow after hanging up a flyer at the local high school offering to teach pottery classes at her home. Low is a peculiar teenager with BIG feelings. The more time she spends with the beautiful newcomer, the more obsessed she becomes. When Jamie enters the picture and starts taking up more of Freya's time, Low becomes insanely jealous. One night Freya and her husband invite Jamie and her husband over, and what happens next changes their lives forever.

Unfortunately this book didn't work for me. I felt the story was all about everyone always trying to please Freya. Max, Low, Jamie all seemed to succumb to her charm no matter what the consequences. Freya comes off as sweet and innocent at first, like a victim because of what happened with Max, but when things don’t go her way watch out! I wanted to shake Low because she was so blinded by her obsession with Freya. She couldn’t see how toxic the relationship really was.
I will say that I did like reading about all the different points of views. While this book wasn't for me, it may be for you!

Wine Pairing: Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells

It was hard to rate this book. While it wasn’t great I couldn’t put it down. The characters kept me going and then I felt like I was waiting for some big bomb to drop which did finally in the last few chapters. I didn’t love the book but something about it make me keep plowing through. 3/5

This was a book about crazy, dysfunctional people that you didn't like... but wanted to keep reading about. Low is a teenage girl who didn't fit in with her peers because of her height, because she's a bit odd and because she lives in a "sex cult." Her parents are hippies and swingers, although on the island where they live, it's apparently not just acceptable, but the norm for people to be with others.

Freya is a narcissist, who gets off on manipulating other people. She pits people against each other and when she doesn't get her way, she flies off the handle. She's married to Max, an ex-hockey player looking to escape. Jamie is Freya's friend, who is spineless and just desperately wants a baby. Her husband, Brian, is also spineless and apparently a not-so-great writer. One night, the four of them take magic mushrooms and swap partners. Freya ends up pregnant, but whose baby is it? Jamie wants the baby. Freya wants Jamie to go away... and Low just watches and inserts herself into their lives.

It's crazy, it's messed up, but it was definitely an enjoyable read.

Twisted, with a twist. 1.5 jaw drops.
TW: infertility and domestic violence

I am so utterly and completely confused by this book. I expected themes about love and jealously, but not this kind.

Also takes place near Seattle, so that’s cool.

So fun. Devoured in one day. Not the polyamorous representation I was looking for, but still a hilarious take on it. I did not enjoy the writing style at first, but quickly stopped noticing as I got sucked into the plot.

um excuse me.............. who gave u permission to take me on such a ride??? what a trip!!! Big scandal, gals gone wild, sexy vibes honestly what more do you want?? This was super fun!

This book certainly kept my attention, but I think it could have been a bit stronger. I liked the way it focused on the characters and their dynamics, it was very interesting. I think I mostly missed a bit of tension and suspense. It felt a bit sudden at the end, and I feel like it could have been built up a bit more.

I also question a few character decisions, some felt very illogical. I think it's part of the point, but I also think it could have been done a bit better.

Not a bad book by any means. If the premise intrigues you, I'd say give it a go.

Freya, a former social media influencer, has moved to an isolated island in the Pacific Northwest with her husband Max, a former hockey player, to start over.

Jamie and her husband, Brian, have just moved to the island for a fresh start after struggling from infertility. When Jamie meets Freya, they immediately become friends.

Low, a self-conscious high school senior, signs up for a pottery class Freya is hosting, and immediately feels a connection with her and wants to spend as much time as possible with Freya.

When Freya invites Jamie and Brian over for a couples night with her and her husband, not only is Low jealous when she finds out, but the consequences of that night change all of their lives forever.

THE SWAP was so addictive! I read this book in one day and almost in one sitting. Overall, I thought it was pretty predictable, but the addictive nature of this book made me unable to put it down!

THE SWAP features short chapters with alternating characters and some unreliable narrators, which I always love. It deals with friendship, and when friendship becomes obsession.

This is my second book by Robyn Harding. I previously read and loved THE ARRANGEMENT, and my love for this book has quickly made Harding an autobuy author for me!

I’ll keep this short, but if you’re a fan of domestic thrillers and looking for a binge read, this one is for you!
