4 STARS.

I finally read one of my most anticipated thrillers of the year and it did not disappoint! Robyn Harding’s thrillers are always so fun + entertaining and The Swap was just that

Dece trashy thriller full of shitty horrible people to read by the pool.

It was an okay book. It was predictable, there was a lot of build up to something happening but it was also easy to figure out what was going to happen, nothing was really surprising. An entertaining read, but certainly nothing ground breaking or gripping about it. I would not describe this as a thriller, mode like a scandalous fiction.

Set on a small island in the Pacific Northwest, two lonely women, a middle aged woman who is desperate for a child (Jamie) and a high school senior (Low) who is a bit of an outcast, fall under the spell of a beautiful social media influencer, Freya, who isn't what she seems on the surface.

This story was kind of hard to like because all the characters had such emotional issues they were hard to know, bond with and truly understand. There was just too much going on and not enough really getting to know the why's. Freya is the main character and you never really get to know her, only tidbits that she is so fun, so pretty, so loved but should be hated by all but she wasn't " I miss her, I love her, I owe her, I believe her. I want to be her BBF, she loves me, she hates me " blah, blah and blah !!!. I think everyone gets a point of view except for Freya and she needed to be understood the most. Freya seems to enjoy the competition between her admirers and leverages her power to get them to succumb to her whims. It certainly seems that Freya’s ability to attract followers is endless. Max, Freya’s former-athlete husband, who is recovering from a career-ending scandal seems subordinated to his wife. Brian, Jamie’s husband whose own artistic efforts have stagnated also succumbs easily to Freya’s extraordinary charms. As testament to her control over the other characters, Freya easily orchestrates a partner swap one fateful night with Jamie and Brian.

I’m not really sure how to feel about this. It’s labeled as a thriller, but in my opinion it barely fits in that category. While obsession, manipulation, and stalking take place in the plot, most of the plot is actually extremely domestic. The final line of the synopsis is that their swap "provides Low with the perfect opportunity to unleash her growing resentment," which sounds a lot more ominous than what actually happens. You know that eventually something bad will happen, but in the meantime, it's mostly deeply unhappy people making bad decisions in their lives.

I would recommend this is domestic drama with light thriller elements appeals to you. I liked it, but it's not what I was expecting at all.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought! The character development was great, the build up to the climax of the story was sooo good. The ending was perfect! 4/5 stars!
