The Swap

Low Morrison is that teenager...the one who doesn’t quite fit in anywhere. She’s 6’ tall with Nordic looks, living on a small island in the Pacific Northwest with an unconventional family and name. It’s no surprise that she’d easily become awed by Freya Light, a married newcomer who’s married to Max, a former hockey star, and is a famous social media influencer. Low signs up for Freya’s pottery class and is sucked in by this enchanting woman who not only pays attention to her but wants her friendship. But, when Freya visits Jamie Vincent’s store and they become fast friends, Low feels her relationship threatened, which disrupts her newfound confidence. Then Jamie’s life is upended when she and her husband spend a drug-enhanced evening with Freya & Max and waken with the wrong partners.

Honestly, I wasn’t far into the story before I saw the inevitable train wreck coming, not because of any one event but because I’ve seen someone like Freya before. She’s charmingly shallow and manipulative, attracting wounded souls like Low and Jamie who lack the skills to see the danger signs. But, Freya’s pretty good, though and her timing is just about perfect...knowing when to push and pull. Just like with any disaster you see coming, I was powerless to look away and wanted to reach inside the story and bring them to safety.

This took just a little time to become hard to put down, a slightly slow burn in the beginning and once it took hold, I kept delaying my stopping point (you know, just one more chapter). I loved that there were multiple narrators used for the four points of view represented. All delivered wonderful performances, capturing the voices of their respective characters. As much as I thought I knew the ending, it took an unexpected turn that was in no way predictable. A perfect example of why this author is an auto read for me. I’m going back and listening to that ending again.

The Swap was a super unique story full of drama, untrustworthy characters, and pure chaos. I loved being plunged into the world of these characters where their friendships overlapped, collided, and competed. Every character was uniquely written and (mildly) unlikeable which kept my opinion of them pretty level throughout it all. I couldn't put this down - I was taken over by the need to keep seeing the characters one-up each other. The chapters switch between character's POVs but we never truly get inside the head of the mysterious and well-loved Freya which was a great way to make her as unreachable to us as she is to the rest of them.

There was a lot of things constantly happening in this book which gave me a bit of whiplash, but I still was super absorbed in the story. The Swap is definitely more domestic drama with mild thrills, but it was a messy story that I couldn't look away from.

If you're a fan of guilty pleasure realty tv shows, this one might be for you.

Absolutely wild

This was wild. Not necessarily good, but wild.

I hate all of the characters.

3/5 stars. This was a quick and easy read though I wouldn’t say necessarily suspenseful. I kept reading because I couldn’t believe these characters were so crazy.

The summary of the book led me to believe this book would deal with the fallout of friendships after “the swap” but the swap isn’t talked about between characters for a decent chunk of the book.

This is more about obsession, the blurred lines between friendship and romance, and mental health.
The main character, Low, was a bit too much for me and I didn’t enjoy any of the characters in her voice.

What did I just read? #theswap This book was complete insanity! After finishing this one earlier today, I had to step back and take a few minutes to process what I had just read....my mind was reeling. All of the characters in this book are lying, some are manipulative, some have an creepy/stalker obsession, and I never knew from one page to the next what was going to happen. Each of the characters were messed up in their own ways. This book was a fast paced, disturbing and mess with your mind psychological type of thriller that I love. Low becomes obsessed with Freya and while spying on her, sees activities that those involved want to keep quiet.
