The writing voice is SO unique. I’m still not sure if I like it or not, but the voice and the story were intriguing enough that k wanted to finish the book and I plan to finish the trilogy as well. A very unique read!

Meh, I couldn't really get into this, although I really wanted to. It was so odd and quirky and interesting but it was just too much for me and too confusing. I gave up halfway through. Maybe I'll try again at another time.

If you like Lemony Snicket and/or Edgar Allen Poe you will like this book. It was a little slow at first but once it got started it was excellent. Quite postmodern for a children's book. Not for everyone.

I saw Edward Carey read from Heap House at a book festival. He is a brilliant reader of his work and gave us a great foundation for the book which I think helped me going into it. It's the story of the Iremonger family who live in a giant house above a heap of trash outside London. Each family member is assigned an object at birth that they must keep with them their entire lives. The birth objects helped them to ward off sickness. The story starts as one of the aunts loses her birth object and then their whole system starts to crumble. It is incredibly imaginative and quite macabre. It was a little difficult to keep track of all the names and it was so rich in details that I'm sure I missed a lot. I would say it's definitely for the upper middle grade reader. I would say 5th grade would be the youngest I would recommend it.

Odd and dark yet also whimsical and childish, with some of the best quirky dialogue I've read in a long time.
