The Goddess Chronicle was almost entirely not what I was hoping for, but it was delightful in its own right and a book very worth reading.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book so quickly, but this one I couldn’t put down.

I am really interested in Mythology and this retelling did not disappoint. I was hooked and wanted to know what was going to happen next. There were some parts that were repetitive or a little lacklustre but overall it was a really thrilling story about life and death, betrayal and love. As the book says, everything has an opposite and it was fascinating to see them be put into play throughout the book.

I also feel like there’s a slight message that even if you try to escape fate, it will still make sure your fulfil it even if it’s in death.

The reason this book has three stars is that it isn't terrible nor is it anything remarkable. The story was readable yet bland. Brutal yet boring. Odd combinations, I know.

The premise was very good, interesting even. Two sisters on opposite sides usually makes for interesting conflict. I think the main reason that the story came off so bland was this lack, the conflict lasted at most two pages and was over as soon as you realised what it was. There was no buildup for this conflict, and when there was some there was barely anything going on. We were told instead of shown what was happening to the main characters.

However, the writing style is true to the mythology that the author is trying to recreate. There is a lovely atmosphere created with beautiful flowers contrasting the ignorant cruelty of locals. It had all the tools to be completely horrifying, but in the end it was a bit off the mark.

I picked up this book because I was looking up at all the books published under the Cannongate Myth series. I liked the myth this book deals with, the backstory is so rich, and for the first half, I enjoyed the beauty of the island, and the love story through these words.
It is the second half that got to me. I couldn't accept the negativity the goddess carries in her heart, and it was hard for me to be invested in the book once I realized this.

A retelling of the Japanese Creation Myth of Izanami and Izanaki.

This is the first time I've read a book and didn't know if I loved it or hated it. Maybe hate isn't quite right. The book is beautifully written, it has such wonderful descriptions and I have no real problems with the plot. But at the same time.... Something just didn't sit well with me when I finished it. Perhaps it was the ending. I wanted a better fate for the characters I had come to care about. Or maybe not better but different. Overall though regardless of whether or not I loved it, I think it is definitely worth reading. Especially if, like myself, you are a fan of Natsuo Kirino.
