This was.. so so. Not great, not bad. I always thought Spawn was supposed to be more badass than this. Maybe the comic is just going through its awkward, emo, introduction phase?

I love the art work! So well done. The story line was great because I could see how closely the movie followed the story. Wonderful!

A trip down memory lane. Spawn is an antihero originally conceived of as a minion-mercenary of Hell, and is gloriously represented in this early 1990s coming from McFarlane. It still shocks me because I read this still through the eyes of a pre-teen, and Spawn goes where even the more violent incarnations of Batman dare not tread.

It's not because of the movie. It's not because I grew up as kid during the 1990s. And it's not because I ever owned an action figure. It's because I needed to buy a water bottle and the comic-shop's card reader doesn't read any charge under $5. I bought Spawn, and sat down to draw for a while, leaving it in it's plastic wrap until a few days after the purchase.

Even though I knew nothing of the character and his world SPAWN is a character which has, much like the Crow, lived past the 90s and has established some kind of place in the pantheon of comics. Whether or not Spawn deserves that place is best left for the people who keep the records, but for my own part I'm torn. Spawn as a narrative, as an art, and as a character most certainly deserve the attention of any reader who consider themselves fans of comics. However this individual book is probably not worth their time. The collection feels terribly incomplete and not just because it ends on a cliff-hanger. This slim volume contains 6 issues of the comics and provides only a few extra materials for the fans of Spawn who probably already own the denser compendiums.

Should the reader read this book, sure. This was a nice introduction to the character and the foundation of his universe. But should the reader shop around for a more extensive collection, almost certainly. Spawn is a character with a great costume and a fascinating universe, which I why he deserves to be in a better collection. Find that collection and read it.

If you’re a fan of 90s cheese and violence, Spawn is the comic for you. Dialogue leaves a lot to be desired, but the ideas are good, art is fantastic for that blocky, muscled fashion. Definitely a fun time. One question though— why does Malebolgia have hair like Dave Mustaine??

3.5-4/5 stars— definitely not perfect, but it has its charm.

I haven't actually read Spawn before. I've always been intrigued by the character, probably from when the movie came out which I was banned from seeing since I was so young. Wonderfully creepy, dark, and a good introduction for someone like me.

I really enjoyed this. It's very 90's. There's a lot of text, it's super edgy, and a lot of the color is kind of garish. It's so rad though. Like, it's probably the raddest comic you could read. Spawn broods from rooftops while his cape billows dramatically. There's gore, but not as much as you would see in a horror comic. Character's make a lot of somewhat deviant quips. The main character kills people. It's really obvious that this was a creator trying to escape the bounds of DC and Marvel. I think it was successful, and I enjoyed it a lot out of 90's nostalgia. I think most people wouldn't need to read it unless they were interested in exploring the broad canon of comics though.

There's an attempted rape and some pretty graphic violence. I'm not putting it in my classroom, but I think a lot of teens interested in comics would dig it. 16+
