Quality of the writing is not great, but it almost works given the novel’s historical setting. Plot is probably the most solid of the four Practical Magic novels, but even then is pretty pale.

A birthday recommendation. I read this book quickly and easily. It’s a right old yarn , about witches and occultism in an historical setting. I’d say it would be a good holiday read- nothing too heavy with a good pace. It has got more holes in it than Emmental and some of the action is very contrived and completely fanciful but somehow it’s compelling (perhaps a spell in the book??) I raced through it despite feeling it has little literary merit

Best out of the series holy cow

I wanted soooo badly to love this book. It had a great beginning but somewhere around the halfway point it got so boring. I would have like to spend more time with Faith and the how she started to go down the dark path.
I think she should have cursed her father too - like she planned to do. The dog should not have died- at least not in the way he did - that was unnecessary. It was a total cop out for Samuel to die and come back. And somehow that prevented the curse to get him a second time?
there are some things the movie did better with Maria Owens - and I think the best one was that SHE saved herself from being hung. And SHE built her own house while pregnant. Mad respect for that Maria Owens. I don’t think the Samuel Davis character should have been so prominent. I would have like to see Maria crash out more for what John Hawthorn did to her and her child.

Overall - the book just could’ve been better.

I could just kind of care less to finish this? Maybe in the future I will come back to this, but for right now I do not want to continue this book
