I haven't read a book by Karen Rose for a very long time, but I must start reading them again. This book was brilliant, it had a very good storyline, lots of twists and turns along the way and kept me guessing until the very end. Can't wait to read the next in this series.
I really enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down. Deacon Novak is such an interesting character. I also enjoyed learning about what made Faith Corcoran tick. Both have significant baggage in their pasts, but both work hard to do what's right. Faith has moved home to Cincinnati with a new name. She finds a young woman who has been raped and tortured. Deacon knows she's not telling them everything she knows, but he doesn't think she's part of the crime. Deacon learns that someone has tried to kill Faith numerous times. This brings out his protective instincts. Everyone thinks he's losing his objectivity but he's really seeing the truth. He and his partner work hard to figure out what is going on. They know there is a serial killer who was using Faith's old family home. But, there is a very twisty road to the conclusion. A really good read!
This book took me for-freaking-ever to finish. I liked it enough to keep reading, but I didn't like it enough to drop everything and sit and read it.
I generally enjoy Karen Rose's book--this seemed so thrown together. I got to many of the plot twists long before the characters did.

A thrill-a-minute ride of kidnapping, murder and suspense. All of this also has an instant love story between two people who have never really fit in among "normal" people.
This is a really long book, but the number of twists and turns, new suspects, eliminated and then included suspects, people masquerading as people that they are not - they made it go very quickly. And it was all summed up nicely by one of the MCs at the end, in case you missed anything!

Faith Corcoran has had a rough few years dealing with a stalker and many attempts on her life when she comes into possession of her grandmother’s house. Thinking of escaping and starting a new life she heads towards the house. The house has scared her since she was a child but she starts to piece things together once she learns it’s been used to store and torture young women. Determined to catch whoever has been doing this, she helps the police, even if it means bringing up old memories she wishes never to think of again. This novel proves that you can never be too sure about the people we keep close to us. It’s a gripping tale that has readers hooked from the start. Between the list of characters who could be behind the murders and after Faith, to the rising romance between Faith and FBI Agent Deacon Novak this novel was brilliantly crafted. Lots of clues were given to the reader about the murder, but the author gave and pulled away, setting the novel with the perfect pace. Plots developed respectfully and there was never a dull moment because the point of view would always shift giving the reader a bit of leverage over the characters. Overall, it was a bone-chilling thrill of a novel to read; this is definitely a great mystery, thriller, romance that should be read.
The writing is good...but I found it slow for a suspense novel, it's mired in detail a lot of which could have been removed in a good edit without effecting the story.
Like many suspense novels there are twists and red herrings a plenty...possibly a few too many making things feel too contrived and unrealistic.
I did enjoy some elements of the book, there were even a lot of sections that had me completely gripped and unable to put it down, but there were also a lot that just bored or frustrated me and i skipped whole sections.
A lot of the book was dedicated to the romance between the two protagonists. It was largely these sections I skipped, the lusting and drooling over each other made the main hero and heroine seem like immature teenagers, and the sex scenes made me cringe. I will admit that that romance is not my favourite genre and so this made it difficult to enjoy the story. I also struggled to care about the main characters, especially Faith. Her perfection was unrealistic and made her two dimensional and dull.
In conclusion the book has a lot of good points, and lots of very good reviews on here but wasn't at all for me and doesn't make me want to read anything else by this author.

4 stars
This was my favorite Karen Rose novel so far. I am fairly new to Romantic Suspense and I like her style even though this one was a little steamier than her others between the two main leads, but that was ok.
It is a bit shocking in some places. She sure knows how to write about serial killers whose motives are more than 'I just snapped'. It is creepy, really.
